Dr. Forrest Claire “Phog” Allen [1885-1974 age 88]
LAWRENCE, Kan., Sept. 16 (AP)—Dr. Forrest C, (Phog) Allen, who coached basketball at the University of Kansas for nearly four decades and fought to add that sport to the Olympic Games’ slate, died today. He was 88 years old and lived here.
Dr. Allen led Kansas teams from 1908 to 1909 and from 1920 through 1956. During those years, the Jayhawks won 591 games and lost 219. When he retired in 1956, college teams he had coached won 771 games for him, a record that stood until 1968 when one of Dr. Allen's former pupils, Adolph Rupp of the University of Kentucky, broke it.
Dr. Allen, who was a practicing osteopath, was dubbed Phog by sports writers for the quality of his foghorn voice. The spelling deviation remains. obscure.
He was a college star at Kansas and played under Dr. James A. Naismith, who is credited with inventing the game of basketball.
Dr. Allen coached teams at Central Missouri State, Baker University in Kansas and Haskell Institute, besides the Jayhawks, who won 24 Missouri Valley, Big Six and Big Seven Conference championships before the league became the Big Eight.
His 1952 team won the National Collegiate Athletic Association championship, and his 1940 and 1953 teams won N.C.A.A. Western championships before losing in the national finals.
Dr. Allen considered one of his greatest accomplishments was that basketball was added to the Olympic Games in 1936. He was also instrumental in beginning in 1939 the N.C.A.A. tournaments.
Some of Dr. Allen's foremost pupils included Clyde Lovellette, Dutch Lonborg, John Bunn, Ralph Miller and Frosty Cox.
Dr. Allen was named coach of the year in 1950 and was elected to the Naismith Hall of Fame in 1959.
He leaves four children.
