Capt. Holland Wheeler II, son of Holland Wheeler and Frances (Saxton) Wheeler, was born at Saxtons River, VT, April 19, 1837. He was graduated from Norwich University as civil engineer, and came to Lawrence, Kans., the same year, residing here continuously until his death, April 14, 1920. He has been in general practice as a civil engineer for sixty years, remaining active until but a short time before his death. He was first employed in the survey of Leavenworth, Lawrence and Ft. Gibson, now A.T.S.F. railway, and the Leavenworth Branch of Kansas Pacific. He had, charge of Solomon, Junction City and McPherson branches of the Kansas Pacific railway, and made survey of 200 miles of the Kansas Pacific main line. He survey the Kansas Pacific to Colorado Springs, Manitou and Ute Pass. He was Chief Engineer for Sedalia, Warsaw and Southern railway, and od the survey for the Missouri Pacific in constructing the Platte River bridge. He was surveyor in Kansas City, MO., for several years, constructing Chelsea Park, Consolidated Cities and Kensington branches of the elevated road. Also laid out parks, streets and additions.
Mr. Wheeler was city engineer of Lawrence almost continuously since it foundation and held the position at the time of his death.
