Obituary
James Henry Lane [1814-1866 age 52] was a prominent figure in establishing Kansas as a “free state.” and as a key figure in “Bleeding Kansas”. Lane was the first U.S. Senator from Kansas [1861-1866]. He was one of the primary targets sought during Quantrill's Raid August 21, 1863. In depression, Lane shot himself on July 1, 1866, and died 10 days later July 11, 1866.
